California College Roundup

A bomb threat closed Diablo Valley College yesterday "after two sets of bomb-sniffing dogs led police to identify [a student locker] as a 'possible threat location.'''  A faculty strike at Hartnell College by full- and part-time instructors picketing faculty contracts has administrators trying to keep classes going; no classes have been cancelled as of yet, though about 60% of the faculty is on strike.  Throw in the recent UCSC student protest "that had regents trapped indoors and demonstrators clashing with police," and California colleges have had a busy week.  Glad to see our students are learning the many virtues of free speech and democratic organization.

Ahh, yes. Here in California we wish we had a Kent State. . .

Yikes though. I am applying to UCSC too-- most well known as the biggest party school in the UC system (not that I am like that), which may explain the rioting.

I'm not sure I follow.

Oh. California college students would love to have some sort of protest so crazy it would invoke the wrath of the Governator, or even better--the federal government. Similar to the Kent State shootings in 1970, but perhaps without the deaths. I know quite a few people who admire the protests of the 60's and 70's and sort of look upon such racous radicalism with admiration and would see a Kent State- like scenario as a badge of courage.

I mean, UC Berkeley is crazy, but everybody pretty much ignores them now anyway. Humboldt State is definitely a possibility, although if Fresno State doesn't win at least one football game this year this city might have a riot of its own going on.

Ah, I see. I wasn't sure who would really want National Guardsmen to come in and start offing people.
I see your point about reminiscing about the 60s and 70s. I read a number of comments comparing the recent Columbia Minutemen debacle to the protest there in 1968, but I think there might be just a little bit of difference between the two.

Cindy Sheehan, BTW, is here in Fresno tonight proselytizing (the news said lecturing, but please) at the University. The President of the campus College Republicans was asked to respond to some of Sheehans "Nuremberg" comments, and told local reporters that he saw Sheehans comments as "lunacy". Hopefully the majority of students will share the same opinion as he.

I think a bunch of the leftist professors on campuses across the nation are upset that students today are generally far more conservative than their 1960-70s counterparts. And even the lefty students who protest are considerably less radical (in action, not belief) today.
