From John Brown U: Rejoice in a (Particular) Death
Knowing I am not usually around a radio or the internet while I work, my mother asked me last night if I'd heard any news yesterday. When I replied that I had not, she said with some jubilation, “We got him. We got Zarqawi.” To my retort that the media had reported similar stories several times earlier, all obviously falsely, she said that Zarqawi’s body had been positively identified, and this time by American officials.
From John Brown U: Summer Trip
As readers of my personal blog Believing In Thinking know, I am currently on a road trip of the east coast with my brother, a recent college graduate. We started in Texas and went down to Florida, and have made our way up the coast, visiting a number of historical sites along the way. The experience has been absolutely fantastic. I have traveled through much of Europe, but nothing compares to the historical richness of this great country. This, my first visit to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, has overwhelmed me in my appreciation of my country's culture and background.
From John Brown U: America's Next War?
Given the present world political situation, one wonders if the United States will be brought into another war in the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, unilaterally or through United Nations action. Though the military has rebuilt from 1999’s twenty year low of full-time equivalent troops, the Department of Defense seems to be focusing more on defense through peacekeeping than on purely domestic defense. Following the September 11 attacks, the question of whether or not there will be another war fought on North American soil has become a foremost issue in political discussion and government strategy.
From John Brown U: A Lesson in Accountability
Yet another Republican has been convicted of a crime. One is tempted to say that one simply has to expect such action, because Republicans are clearly a bunch of morally bankrupt, corrupt officials only out for their own good.
Or maybe not.
From John Brown U: Immigration; Not All Illegal and Not all U.S.
As I was reading about US immigration, I was again forced to consider the legal and other implications of the problem. As we all know, America was founded by immigrants. I myself come from a Scots-Irish family that came over in 1795, and I am extremely proud both of my Scots-Irish and my American heritage. Yet as the country filled up (figuratively, if not quite literally), immigration obviously became more difficult, until we are arrived at our current station. Do we allow more immigrants in, and jeopardize American jobs? Do we shut down the borders completely for security purposes? Do we make citizens the illegal immigrants who have already made their way in and just want a better life? Do we deport those who have broken the law?
