The Progressivism of Facebook
Being the good college students that we are, and likely either procrastinating during the first weeks of classes or waiting for school start, many of you, like me, probably noticed some interesting things over Facebook this morning. They have instituted a new 'layout' including 'feeds' which constantly update with what all your friends are up: who they’ve friended, whose wall they’ve posted on, what groups they’ve joined, what parts of their profile they’ve edited, etc. And you, like almost every other user of the site, probably found this to be extremely creepy.
The first word to came to my mind was "stalker." And the new tools are perfectly suited for such hobbies. Sure, stalking was always possible via facebook; but it used to require effort and you could still rest assured that the proper privacy settings would hide even the existence of your account from anyone who was not your friend. Now, though, stalking isn't only made easier, it is practically encouraged!
Needless to say, the rebellion began instantaneously. At my last attempt, a search for groups using the phrase "i hate the new facebook" yielded 392 results.
Now I think we conservatives can take an extremely interesting, and very encouraging, lesson away from this. Today's events are a perfect example of the problem with needless innovation and 'change for the sake of change.' That is, progress. Progressivism is the political and social ideology (the word ideology, alone, being enough to point out its flaws. Read: conservatism is not an ideology - more on that another time) that believes progress is the greatest good; we should always be seeking to 'advance' in whatever ways possible, any problems which may arise are simply the growing pains necessary to improve and will be sorted out by further innovation.
Edmund Burke, however, adeptly punctured this balloon of hot air in his treatise on the French Revolution and the vapidity of its philosophical assumptions. As he noted, a state without the means to some form of change is without the means to its survival, but blind abstraction instead of cautioned, careful reform and adaptation is a recipe for disaster. In France's case, it lead - as Burke predicted - to Napoleon; in Facebook's case it has lead to a boiling point in user frustration with the constant changes and 'updates' to the site. Over the past year, each new feature, while eventually accepted, has been at first met with skepticism and doubt. Today's overhaul has proved to be the final straw. Or should we say bale?
The good news is that this proves something I have long held about college students. To start, observe this: the percentage of college students who call themselves 'liberal' is much higher than the percentage of grown adults and elderly people who call themselves the same. The only conclusion is that a sizeable group, at some point in their lives, change their affiliation or accept their true leanings. It is this latter option which I believe occurs more frequently and the mass revulsion to facebook's recent changes supports this.
Many college students call themselves liberal because they hate republicans (who, for some idiotic reason, they equate with conservatives) or think conservative is a dirty word. Some call themselves liberal because that's how they were raised, or because they find themselves sentimentally dedicated to a plank in the Democratic platform (though I won't make the parallel mistake of equating Democrats with liberals). The overarching theme is, I believe, that 'liberal' college students, more often than 'conservative' college students, put less thought into describing and/or examining their political beliefs. And to be sure, being a conservative college student requires you to constantly defend your ideas and positions; one cannot long be an uninformed, simply reactionary conservative without seeming a fool.
Thus, later in life these bandwagon-liberals will experience something that makes them realize where their values lie. An aversion to massive changes in a college social networking site isn't likely to induce hoards of political conversions; but it is indicative of the underlying forces, social institutions, and aspects of human nature which are to the conservative's advantage. The project of our generation ought to be to study, reflect on, engender, and educate others about these parts of our society.
So now that we know what we need to do, the only question left is: who will be facebook's Napoleon?
